From Our Perspective

AbleTo’s mission is to improve patient outcomes by treating behavioral health issues that interfere with medical recovery. Everyone here—our senior team, our therapists and coaches, our engagement specialists—shares this common purpose: to make reliable behavior change therapy available to the those who need it, right when they need it, wherever they may be.

Our Founding Principles

  • AbleTo will offer a best-practice, behavior change solution that will help everyone who needs it.
  • AbleTo’s behavior change therapy will be targeted, short and reliable.
  • AbleTo will leverage technology to provide treatment to the home, anywhere in the U.S.
  • AbleTo will implement high-quality engagement to ensure we reach people in need.
  • AbleTo will use measurable, tangible results to constantly improve our solution’s quality.
  • AbleTo’s approach will lower the cost-of-care and be financially self-sustaining.

People who face a difficult medical health issue or a significant life transition can become overwhelmed, stressed, anxious and depressed. Most of them think they just have to “handle it” and may not be aware that affordable and effective therapy can make a real difference. Even if people in these circumstances want to find help, they may not know where to look for it.

Addressing behavioral health issues has a direct, positive impact on patients’ medical recovery and overall health.

AbleTo addresses those feelings of being overwhelmed or stuck or depressed. We partner with insurance payers to reach millions of people who can benefit from our treatment.

That’s one reason that engagement is a core part of our solution. We have to find and encourage people to get the help they need.  And when we do find and engage them, we deliver highly-targeted therapy, professionally delivered and supervised to ensure the highest quality of care.

The state of healthcare in the U. S. has changed over the past few years. The Affordable Care Act has increased visibility and support for behavioral health treatment. The technology needed to deliver therapy and coaching to the home, using a phone or secure video, is available everywhere.  And the research evidence is convincing: treating behavioral health improves medical outcomes, increases work productivity and lowers overall cost.

The time is right to challenge the status quo and to make convenient, effective, behavioral health treatment available nationally. AbleTo was created to do just that.

General Questions About AbleTo

What is AbleTo?

AbleTo (pronounced “able to”) helps people overcome emotional challenges brought on by changes in their medical health or by significant life transitions. Our eight-week, evidence-based, behavior change treatment helps patients create measurable, lasting changes to their behavioral health, which in turn improves their medical health.

How are AbleTo’s treatment programs delivered?

AbleTo’s behavior change treatment is delivered, privately and conveniently, via online video chat or telephone to the home or other location the patient prefers. All treatment programs are provided by therapists and coaches in our nation-wide, provider network.

How long does each program last?

All of our programs are provided over eight weeks. During the course of treatment, patients have eight sessions with a dedicated therapist (LCSW) and seven sessions with a dedicated behavior coach.

For Payers

Where does AbleTo fit in the health plan’s network?

We become a preferred provider in your network. We have trained therapists and coaches who are qualified to practice in each of the 50 states.

How long does it take for the health plan to get started with AbleTo?

It can take as little as six weeks to get started. We need to put a contract in place and work with your IT and data team to manage our integration with your workflows and systems.

How do you help the health plan to market and explain AbleTo services to our members?

AbleTo provides on-site training for plan employees and representatives, including your customer-facing member care team. We also provide written and electronic educational marketing and communications materials.

How do you report back to the plan about our members?

We set up a management system for the plan to report back transparently and completely. Reports can include engagement rates, graduation rates, customer satisfaction, percent change in Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS) scores and other data you may require.

Can the plan refer patients directly to AbleTo?

In addition to the ‘Identify’ stage in the AbleTo behavior change solution, we work closely with your providers, care nurses and case managers to set up a secure and streamlined referral process.

Is AbleTo a wellness provider?

No. AbleTo is a provider and treats behavioral health issues for patients going through difficult medical and life transitions. Our behavior change treatments, however, do have a positive impact on patients’ wellness going forward.

Are you a disease management provider?

We work side by side with Disease Management and other Care Management programs regularly to receive referrals of members that may benefit from our behavior change solution. This letter explains a bit more.

For Patients

How can I participate in an AbleTo program?

Our treatment programs are offered through participating health plans. Because of recent healthcare legislation, behavioral healthcare is increasingly covered by health plans. Check with your health plan or employer to see if AbleTo is available to you.

Are AbleTo’s treatment programs covered by my health plan? Is there a co-pay or deductible?

AbleTo completes a benefits check and will confirm coverage before the treatment program begins. Co-pays and deductibles are based on the terms of your specific health plan.

How long is each treatment and coaching session?

The initial session is 60-90 minutes long. All remaining sessions last 45 minutes. Each week, our patients have one session with their therapist and one with their behavior change coach.

Do I have to travel to a doctor’s office? Is there one near me?

All our treatment and coaching sessions are provided over the telephone or over secure video. You are treated in the comfort of your home or anywhere that’s convenient.

How will AbleTo protect my privacy?

AbleTo providers must comply with all HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations to ensure your privacy and to keep your treatment information confidential.

What’s the advantage of having treatment over the phone or secure video?

The main benefit is convenience for you: you can be wherever you want, for instance in the privacy of your own home. You don’t have to travel or wait in an office, saving time and money. Because of this convenience, our patients rarely miss sessions leading to good progress and improved outcomes.

For Medical Professionals/Doctors

What kind of therapy does AbleTo deliver?

AbleTo’s behavior change programs are based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an evidence-based approach that helps patients change unwanted behaviors, improves patients’ emotional skills and their outlook. Our unique, end-to-end solution is quick and effective. And our treatment has been shown to directly impact hospitalizations and cost-of-care.

How will the AbleTo program benefit my patients?

AbleTo’s programs result in improved emotional health outcomes (which include reducing depression, stress, and anxiety) and better medical health outcomes (including, for example, fewer hospital admissions, fewer days spent in the hospital, improved blood glucose monitoring, and lower blood sugar). See our peer-reviewed research.

How do you know if your treatment programs work?

We track initial DASS-21 scores to establish baseline depression, anxiety, and stress levels and we test again at the completion of our treatment programs. Our patients provide feedback during and upon completion of the program, all of which is carefully reviewed and acted upon. Clinically, our 8-week program has been proven to lower behavioral health outcomes and hospitalization days. See our study on cardiac patients for rigorous research results.

How do you ensure the quality of your treatment?

First, our network of professional therapists and coaches are both qualified (for example, experienced LCSW’s) and well-trained. Second, we have robust guidelines and protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery. Third, our clinical supervisors oversee treatment, reviewing every session note and managing case conferences for each patient. See the AbleTo Virtuous Cycle of Quality.
